Emma Lawson

COMMISSIONING EDITOR, COMEDY

Emma has amassed over 20 years’ experience in scripted television across various production and development roles; working with major indies including Objective (Peep Show, Star Stories), Fremantle (Count Arthur Strong) and Roughcut TV, where she stayed for 10 years working with Ash Atalla across many projects including five series of Cuckoo & People Just Do Nothing. In 2019 Emma moved to BBC Studios to produce Series 1 of Trying, the first scripted comedy for Apple TV+, which led to an in-house commissioning role at the streamer. She left Apple in 2021 to produce Smothered, a sitcom she originated for Sky Max, before moving into her commissioning role at BBC Comedy in 2022. Emma is a highly passionate regional development and working-class inclusion advocate - she co-founded the North East Comedy Hot House in 2018 as a way to develop regional comedy talent and connect them with broadcast opportunities. She has continued this work within her role at BBC, leading on various outreach projects including the BBC Comedy Collective and BBC Comedy Grants initiatives.
